The Ultimate Destruction

TheUltimateDestructionimage_02He must make a decision even though it is hard. To kill his darlings, the ones he nurtured and brought to their pinnacle, is a task no Creator wants. But sometimes it’s a must.

It seems unnatural these beloveds would be so cruel, but it’s nature of the willful to think themselves invincible. Oh, the havoc they wreak—all of it in wayward ignorance but no less dangerous and damaging to the One who gave them the choice.

Each time He tries to get them right, but every time they fail. Like an ouroborus of creation, the circle remains unbroken. The Ultimate Destruction endures only to destroy through renewal, it’s carnage a regeneration of chance.

THREE STAR ISLAND lrg_400x600

Stepping through a time portal into 1716, historian Penny Saunders didn’t expect to get stranded in the past. Five years later, now a pariah to the townsfolk of Three Star Island, she endures solitude and ridicule until a hurricane tosses a dangerous castaway onto her shores.

William Payne’s history precedes him. Pirate, outlaw, and ruthless captain, he’s a monster among men . . . or so it seems. Desperately seeking redemption for his blood-soaked past, he upends Penny’s world by showing her a passion she’s never experienced.

But time is closing in on them; the governor of the Carolinas has rescinded his pirates’ pardon, the locals are growing suspicious of Penny’s new houseguest, and she can’t keep her secrets from William forever. When everything falls apart, she must use both wits and weapons against lawmen and pirates alike to save the one man who would tear down the world for her.

Somewhat to the dismay of her parents, her interests led her into both museums and graveyards as a child, a trend which has continued into her adulthood. This has influenced her reading tastes and her writing, whether it be a good ghost story, thrilling tales of time-travel, or devouring endless volumes of ancient warfare.

She signed a contract with Soul Mate Publishing in 2018 for her first novel, Three Star Island, a time-travel story set in 1721. She enjoys writing strong, quirky heroines, and has a weakness for cheeky heroes who have as much compassion as they have flaws.

Kat currently lives in North Carolina with her Englishman and a few cats.

GUEST POST

Last year was the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The following might add some further appreciation to this accomplishment of the first Science Fiction novel.

14 Things To Know about Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, the author of Frankenstein.

  • Born in 1797, Mary Shelley was the daughter of two famous radicals, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, a feminist, and William Godwin, known for his proto-anarchist political beliefs.
  • Due to the lack of germ theory, doctors did not wash their hands before seeing patients. Mary Shelley’s mother died of childbirth fever, probably due to this lack of sanitation. Perhaps leaving Mary with the guilt that she caused her mother’s death by being born.
  • Her father remarried resulting in Mary having two step siblings and a half-brother.
  • Mary was sixteen when she began her affair with Percy Bysshe Shelley–who was married at the time and whose wife was pregnant.
  • Mary had her first child with Shelley out of wedlock when she was 17, and that child, born premature, died after only a few weeks of life.
  • Prior to writing Frankenstein, Mary wrote in her journal that she dreamt of her dead infant returning to life.
  • She was only able to marry Shelley after his wife committed suicide. Mary was 18 at the time.
  • She began her novel Frankenstein at the age of 18.
  • By the time Mary was 25, she was a widow and had witnessed the death of 3 children plus nearly died of a miscarriage. Her son, Percy Florence Shelley, was her only child to reach adulthood.
  • The first printing of Frankenstein (1818) was anonymous, and thought to be written by her husband.
  • The popularity of Frankenstein may be due to the numerous staged and film adaptions of the book, over one hundred plays, in the past two hundred years.
  • In the first adaption to stage (1823), Frankenstein’s creation was presented as a mute, hulking monster. In the book, his speech is quite elegant. Also the character of the bumbling assistant was a creation of the playwright.
  • Though the plays kept her novel in demand, she never saw any money from the productions due to early copyright laws.
  • Her writing of Frankenstein could be seen as an inditement of men not taking responsibility over their creations, such as children; or about the horror of creation itself due to the death of Mary’s children and the death of her mother due to Mary’s own birth.

BLOG TOUR & INTERVIEW: When It’s All Said & Done — Denise N. Wheatley | #ContemporaryRomance

when its all said and done banner

INTERVIEW

Today I welcome author Denise N. Wheatley to The FlipSide to talk about writing and her book When It’s All Said & Done. Welcome Denise, tell us what When It’s All Said & Done means to you and what you’re hoping readers will take away from the story.

I’ve always been a lover of romance and enjoy writing it just as much as I enjoy reading it. When It’s All Said & Done is fun, contemporary romantic comedy that’s very close to my heart. As the novel came to fruition, I found myself wanting to be friends with the smart, savvy, beautiful women in the book and date the handsome, strong, sexy, men! My goal was to tell an entertaining story that embodies matters of the heart and would leave readers thinking about the colorful characters long after the final chapter.

What are five of your favorite quotes from When It’s All Said & Done?

  1. “Michael, I know it’s not your fault that she came here, but it will be your fault if she stays.”
  2. “If this night has to end now, then I’d love to see you tomorrow.”
  3. Right before she closed her eyes, Leslie looked down at her left hand and decided that maybe an emerald cut diamond would better suit her….
  4. But as Ann Landers once said, if you have love in your life, it can make up for a great many things that are missing. If you don’t have love in your life, no matter what else there is, it’s not enough.
  5. Then she turned back around and walked out the door, knowing that when it was all said and done, she would be entering this next phase of her life with absolutely no regrets.

What makes a good story?

For me, a good story involves an element of romance. That, along with creating strong, interesting, relatable characters, while developing a thoughtful, interesting plot that will keeping readers guessing, makes for an awesome storyline.

Do your characters seem to hijack your books or do you feel like you have the reigns of the stories?

My characters absolutely hijack my books lol! A perfect example would be the protagonists and antagonist in my novel The Road to Bliss. When I began writing that story, I had a solid idea of how it would progress and how things would end. But as I wrote and the storyline developed, certain characters pulled me in a different direction, which completely changed the course of the narrative. I don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say my main character Timber West did not end up with the man I thought she would.

How do you handle writer’s block?

When I get writer’s block, the first thing I do is grow patient with myself, understanding that I’m just not on a roll that day or week. If I spend a whole day on one paragraph, then so be it. I’m just glad to be making progress and moving forward. Another tactic I use during those periods of writer’s block is to just write whatever comes to mind without judging it. No matter how terrible the words may seem, I just write. And usually when I go back and edit what I’ve written, it isn’t nearly as bad as I thought it’d be. I also like to tinker with photography and graphics programs (usually to create promotional pieces for my work) or dabble in another project when I burn out. It’s therapeutic and helps get me back on track.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?

I like to write with noise. Nothing too loud, but I always need a little bit of activity in the background. As strange as it may sound, total silence can be disruptive me when I’m trying to write.

Let’s play ten questions in ten seconds. Go!

  1. Favorite Author: Terry McMillan
  2. Favorite Book: Butterfly by Kathryn Harvey
  3. Sweet or Salty: Sweet
  4. Dream Vacation: Paris
  5. Music or Silence: Music
  6. Plotter or Panster: Plotter
  7. Vanilla or Kink: Kink
  8. Morning Bird or Night Owl: Night Owl
  9. Half Full or Half Empty: Half Full
  10. Boxers, Briefs or Bare: Bare

GUEST POST

The Path I Walked

Thank you so much for hosting me today.

Born and raised in Bucharest, Romania, I had a childhood and upbringing different from what most people outside the country are accustomed to. Since an early age, I loved to read. Growing up in a communist country, where all information was closely monitored, I soon ran out of books.

I had to start of course with the literature mandatory in school, all Romanian authors, but soon, I started to borrow books from my parents’ collection. When most people hear ‘Black Market’ they think of illegal merchandise. For us, was also books. Coming across translated international authors, wasn’t easy, but not impossible either.

I fell in love with ‘The Three Musketeers’ by Alexander Dumas, the first romance book I ever read. I was in my mid-teens, so extremely impressionable. Until today I still believe everyone should have at least one sword, even if only for decorative purposes.

When I attempted to read ‘War and Peace’ by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, I failed miserably, falling asleep before finishing a whole page. I still didn’t get the courage to go back and try to read what at that time, for me, was the most boring book, so I never made it past the first chapter. It served as a good paperweight, and many times I used it to hide underneath another book, usually something frowned upon (for political reasons), like ‘Gone with the Wind’ by Margaret Mitchell.

Around the same time, I managed to put my greedy hands on translated adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays, whose themes are still successfully rehashed today.

One of my best finds has to be Greek Mythology Adaptations. Those gods are still inspiring.

The time came, and I ran out of books to devour, so I started to make my own stories. In school and at home, I was busy creating worlds and characters in my head. The visit at Dracula’s Castle uncovered infinite possibilities. Our ordinary world had become that day less important than my fantasy one. You can only imagine the new level of commotion in my mind. It was the first time I knew what I wanted to do in my life: be an author.

With my first job, life started to interfere with my dreams of writing. Living though the revolution that ended the communism in Romania, brought hope. Unfortunately, the bitter taste of disappointment with the new life, convinced me to leave behind everything I knew. Only months before my twenty-ninth birthday I emigrated to Canada, in a search of a better life.

As an immigrant, I had an allowance of two large travel bags, each no heavier than forty kilograms (or eighty pounds), so I packed my life in those and started new. I still have my fifteen large notebooks, handwritten in Romanian with my first stories. They took half of one of my allowed bags, my most precious possessions.

Year after year, I drifted further and further away from my dreams. With bills to pay and life in general happening every minute of the day, I had to stay focused on my sales/marketing career.

When I thought life couldn’t surprise me anymore, it did. I divorced, and years later, remarried. Following my husband meant yet another big move, this time to the United States of America, my new home. He encouraged me to revisit my dream, give writing a second chance, and so I did.

New challenges rose, but I was determined not to let anything stand between me and my dream this time, not even writing in a language that’s not my native. It took me seventeen years to even dare consider it. English is not even my second language, but my fourth. I was fluent in Spanish at nineteen, and in French at thirty. With time I lost the ability to speak any of the two, but I still can understand some.

If you ever look for a challenge to test your courage and drive, try it. Pick the best language you speak, other than your first, and write a novel. Let me know how that works out. No, really, let me know. If you think having an accent is bad, wait until you have to figure out grammar. Thank God, the accent doesn’t come through in writing.

Many people start new chapters at some point in their lives. For some, the change is major, for others not so much. For me, it was monumental. Both times.

So here I stand today, humbled and grateful for everything I went through. I carry the scars of my battles, and the sweet memories of my victories. Every adventure and step I took brought me where I am today.

I’ve learned to never lose hope. It took me over thirty years to live the dream I had as a teenager. It’s never too late to reach that dream you have. Hold on to it. Foster it’s growth, and above all else, never give up. Second chances happen when you least expect it.

Your body cringes, like an itch inside your skull. The pain is unwelcome, and though not entirely unpleasant, it’s never ending, unyielding to everything you throw at it. You want to scream but silence is the only result you can safely achieve. A scream would rend the fragile membrane of sanity, dashing the tightly held control you’ve managed to maintain.

Until now.

The dam is about to break, and you sense it. You can feel the waves of pain swell the moment before they come crashing down. As your nerves explode from the overload, you wonder is this the end?

BLOG TOUR & GUEST POST: The Matawapit Family — Maggie Blackbird | #contemporaryromance #inspirationalromance

GUEST POST

I remember searching through photos trying to find Bridget, because I already knew who Adam was.  Pictures are nice to have on hand.  Sometimes I get lucky and find a picture, sometimes I don’t.

For Blessed, book one in the Matawapit Family Series, I visualised a young Pat John in his prime (who played Jesse Jim in the CBC TV show the Beachcombers) as Darryl.  But for Emery, he only existed in my imagination, until eXasty Books cover artist Martine Jardin took my ideas and produced Emery for the book’s cover.  She shocked me, because I didn’t expect to see my Emery, the one I dreamed up in my head, on the cover of Blessed.  Goes to show how talented she is.

For Redeemed, when I saw a picture of actress Kimberly Guerrero posing on the cover of a movie poster with the late Steve Reevis for the film The Cherokee Word for Water, I knew I’d found my Bridget Matawapit.

As for hero Adam Guimond, the late actor Sonny Lanham, during his 48 Hours and Predator heyday, was perfect to fill the roll of Adam.  They shared the same muscular build, deep, booming voice, scary laugh, and intimidating presence.

So there’d be no movie, because two of the actors have since passed on.  But it’s nice to wish and wonder.

Redeemed

The Matawapit Family Series Book 2

REDEEMED-Final_400x600A single woman battles to keep her foster child from his newly-paroled father—a dangerous man she used to love.

Bridget Matawapit is an Indigenous activist, daughter of a Catholic deacon, and foster mother to Kyle, the son of an Ojibway father—the ex-fiancé she kicked to the curb after he chose alcohol over her love. With Adam out on parole and back in Thunder Bay, she is determined to stop him from obtaining custody of Kyle.

Adam Guimond is a recovering alcoholic and ex-gangbanger newly-paroled. Through counselling, reconnecting with his Ojibway culture and twelve-step meetings while in prison, Adam now understands he’s worthy of the love that frightened him enough to pick up the bottle he’d previously corked. He can’t escape the damage he caused so many others, but he longs to rise like a true warrior in the pursuit of forgiveness and a second chance. There’s nothing he isn’t willing to do to win back his son–and Bridget.

When an old cell mate’s daughter dies under mysterious circumstances in foster care, Adam begs Bridget to help him uncover the truth. Bound to the plight of the Indigenous children in care, Bridget agrees. But putting herself in contact with Adam threatens to resurrect her long-buried feelings for him, and even worse, she risks losing care of Kyle, by falling for a man who might destroy her faith in love completely this time.

The Matawapit Family Series Book 1

BLESSED_400x600It’s been ten years since Emery Matawapit sinned, having succumbed to temptation for the one thing in his life that felt right, another man. In six months he’ll make a life-changing decision that will bar him from sexual relationships for the rest of his life.

Darryl Keejik has a decade-long chip on his shoulder, and he holds Emery’s father, the church deacon, responsible for what he’s suffered: the loss of his family and a chance at true love with Emery. No longer a powerless kid, Darryl has influence within the community—maybe more than the deacon. Darryl intends on using his power to destroy Deacon Matawapit and his church.

Hoping to save the church, Emery races home. But stopping Darryl is harder than expected when their sizzling chemistry threatens to consume Emery. Now he is faced with the toughest decision of his life: please his devout parents and fulfill his call to the priesthood, or remain true to his heart and marry the man created for him.

This is very erotic book about a spiritual journey.

BLOG TOUR & INTERVIEW: The K Club Dark Side — Rachell Nichole | #DarkErotica #Romance

INTERVIEW

Today on The FlipSide, author Rachell Nichole stops by to talk about her newest release and all things writing. Welcome Rachell!

Hello! And thank you for hosting me today to talk about my newest release, Awakening Submission. This book is a spinoff to my K Club series. It’s darker, and very hot. Sure to melt your Kindle in minutes! 😊 I want to tell you a bit more about my hero, Sir Clayton Schultz, PhD.

It’s late, he’s bored. What does he do?

Write. Clayton is an English teacher, but also a writer, so if it’s late, and he doesn’t have his submissive around to play with, he’s writing about all the naughty things they might get up to.

What kind of food would he impulse buy if hungry?

Italian. The man loves pasta in particular. So manicotti, ravioli, spaghetti, cavatappi. This guy hasn’t met a noodle he doesn’t like!

Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.

He’s a college professor by day and a writer by night, so it can be anything from suits to jeans or lounge clothes.

What is he like first thing in the morning?

Grumpy. And sexy. 🙂 He can wake up ready and raring to go with his submissive, but if he wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, honey, watch out! Sir Clayton can have a little temper.

What is his greatest fear?

Definitely hurting someone he loves. He has a history of making some mistakes as a Dom which ended badly, and so he’s constantly checking in with Jacey and making sure that what they’re doing is okay with her.
Does he have siblings?

Clayton has two older sisters who are twins. He doesn’t get to see them very much, and was never super close with them as a child, so while he has siblings, they’re not really a huge part of his life.

What’s his favorite position?

On top, of course. But really, any position which allows him to have his way with Jacey. Whether that’s up against a wall, or with her bent over the spanking bench, or in the kitchen, on the floor – he’s not real picky, as long as she’s writhing beneath him! They like to get creative, so he’s had her every which way, on the car, in the playroom, in the kitchen, in his office at the college. You’ll just have to read the books for all the fun and interesting places they’ve had naughty time.

Android or iPhone?

Android

Beard or clean-shaven?

Mostly clean-shaven, but a little stubble goes a long way. The model photo is a pretty accurate representation of who Clayton is inside my head.

Personal vehicle or public transport?

Personal vehicle. Clayton likes to be in control, at all times. He is a Dom, after all. He wouldn’t be able to rely on someone else forgetting around.

awakening submission 2_400x600I am not a submissive. Nuh uh, no way. As a relationship therapist, I understand the appeal of kink, I really do, but it was never for me. Until him.

Sir Clayton Schultz, PhD strode into my life unannounced and with the air of arrogance that only a Dom like him could have.

A chance meeting at a kinky conference where I’m teaching a workshop on the psychology of relationships, leads to one hell of a night. But Sir has rules to follow.

We’re intent on having a little fun at the conference and going our separate ways, but when we get home, and realize we don’t live far from one another, we make it all of a week before we’re together in his bed.

But I’m not sure if I can do this whole submissive thing full-time, or how to reconcile being a strong, independent feminist, and Sir Clayton’s submissive.

Bound by Submission

The K Club Dark Side Book 2

bound by submission 2_400x600In our world, No and Red are two very different words.

It doesn’t matter that I’ve decided I’m done being his submissive. I know something is broken between us and I can’t seem to fix it. So, I am intent on no longer being his. But my insistence that I don’t want him is futile, and we both know it. Until and unless a safeword comes out of my mouth, Sir will show me no mercy.

When he asks me to move in with him, I have never felt more secure. But co-habitation brings its own set of issues, and as we navigate the new stage of our relationship, things get complicated.

And when Sir’s first submissive suddenly comes back into his life, and she reveals parts of his past he hasn’t shared with me, I’m not sure what else he’s been hiding. When I discover his secrets, and the accusations against him start flying, I fear I’ve made a terrible mistake.

The Road to Bliss Book Cover_358x600Newly engaged Timber West is a beauty and wellness entrepreneur who seemingly has it all. But her life is turned upside down when she breaks off her engagement with Brian after he questions her career choices and wavers on wanting more children. Timber turns to her friend Eva for sympathy, which is tricky considering Brian is also Eva’s father.

Timber eventually finds love again with sexy actor Alex and moves her company Soothing Bliss into a beautiful commercial space. With an exciting new man and a business that’s flourishing, Timber feels as though she’s on the perfect path. But she’s thrown into a whirlwind of turmoil when Soothing Bliss’s new location is threatened to be purchased by a callous art curator, and Alex’s popularity sparks his wandering eye.

Then Brian reappears and they start up an unlikely friendship, giving Timber just the boost she needs. As Christmastime approaches, Timber’s wish is that her favorite holiday will bring about a miracle in her fight to keep Soothing Bliss in its rightful home. With a little compromise and dose of holiday magic, Timber wonders whether she and Brian can work through their past and mend a relationship that perhaps never should have unraveled.

Reader Alert!
Timber West always plays by the rules. So even she’s surprised when she decides to leave her prestigious job as a chemist and launch a beauty and wellness company. Her fiancé Brian, who was her chemistry professor during college and also happens to be her best friend’s father, isn’t happy with this decision. His disapproval leads to their breakup, but a devastated Timber eventually finds love again with a charismatic movie star. Life is good until both her new relationship and business begin to falter, leaving Timber reevaluating Brian and pondering whether she should give him a second chance.

To My Readers:
A story just isn’t a story without a large dose of romance and a happily ever after. THE ROAD TO BLISS is just that. This novel is a beautiful tale of love and second chances, with plenty of fun, drama and turmoil in between! My main character’s love affair feels so real to me, to the point where I found myself rooting for her in hopes that everything would work in her favor. Writing this book was a wonderful journey, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
