GUEST POST

I’m No Expert But…

Ok, so there are a few things that I am actually an expert at, but there are many more fields of expertise where my skills and experience fall well short of expert classification. Fortunately my opinion and enthusiasm remarkably fill in the gaps. What you will discover here, over time, are things that I’m in no way an expert of. I don’t feel the need to point out my true areas of expertise, as they will be uncovered as an obvious by product of this exercise. For now I’d like to explore what an expert is. According to the dictionary, an expert is a person who is very knowledgeable about or skillful in a particular area. For our purposes an expert is someone that has an informed opinion. Why mess with the dictionary you say. Well why not I say. Was the dictionary always the same? No it has developed and evolved over time. Regardless I’m happy with the definition of expert for the time being. I’m no expert but… therefore refers to a common phrase where by the person speaking the said words in that order is declaring that they are not an expert however their opinion that will soon follow the words ‘I’m no expert but’ are deemed by them to be far greater and wiser than a true expert. Herein lies what could only be described as irony. Unless of course you’d like to describe it as something else.

Road to Nowhere

Evan Shapiro

Genre: Cli-Fi (climate fiction), SciFi, Mystery, Thriller, Satire

Road to NowhereIs humanity on a Road to Nowhere?

What forces are at play behind global warming and its threat to every species? Is humanity irrevocably heading down a Road to Nowhere?

This near future page-turner, weaves conspiracy, murder, genius and love into a fast-paced ride across the globe, through the absurd and beyond.

Patrick, Kirby, Ancient and Costas thrust us into the world of corporate juggernaut, PetroSynth, where science, politics and corruption jostle to determine our future. How can so much power over our planet be in the hands of so few?

“This book is the stuff of modern mythology, an exciting adventure with intricate personalities leaving the reader in a state of agitated ‘not knowing’ until the very end. Can we succeed (we are all in this one together) or will the corporates and their minions win out only to abandon the planet in crisis? A racy and worthwhile read capturing the zeitgeist of our times.” ~ Ian Cohen – first Green MLC, NSW Parliament and Author of ‘Green Fire’

MORE REVIEWS
What makes this debut novel from Evan Shapiro a thoroughly engrossing read is that it is hard to pigeon hole into any particular genre. Part science fiction, thriller, mystery and romp. A fun and at times gritty ride. It’s a page turner written with insight, irreverence and is an apt observation of humanity’s capacity for suffering and destruction, yet with potential to make a positive change. ~ G King

‘Road To Nowhere’ gives us a thought-provoking glimpse into an uncompromising future that brilliantly juxtaposes futuristic hedonism with the bare fundamentals of human frailty. ~ M Jury

Evan Shapiro_359x400About the Author: The second of four children born to would-be bohemians, Evan grew up on a diet of independent cinema, junk TV, Shakespeare and chocolate biscuits. As a toddler he drank Dettol and shampoo and stuck forks into power-points. Growing up he was often reminded by his family that he was lucky to have survived past the age of five. While his parents blamed him for being dangerously active and carelessly inquisitive, he lays the responsibility squarely at their feet for repeatedly leaving Dettol, shampoo and forks within his grasp.

He likes to define the resulting confusion from his upbringing as his ‘perspective’ which he now relentlessly channels into works of fiction.

These day’s he likes to prod people instead of power-points. He lives in Sydney and divides his time between co-parenting, fixing his father’s TV settings, changing his mother’s light bulbs, graphic design work, writing and meditation. He claims to have found the secret to perfect parenting, but as the answer is endless patience he’s not sure it’s any use to anyone.

Elaine Pascale

Genre: Horror

cover_600x462What happens when a kept woman refuses to take her ridatemp and begins thinking for herself? In If Nothing Else, Eve, We’ve Enjoyed the Fruit; she begins talking to bunches of grapes and cantaloupe that convince her to commit murder. Through her visitations with fruit, the woman learns that a gender war can be reversed by traveling back in time and eradicating the Tree of Knowledge and its villainous apples. FLASH FICTION FRIDAY: The Shaft | #freefiction #flashfiction #pictureprompt

THE SHAFT

TheShaftimage_03

Strung up, alone with my madness, I know the ground is far enough away to kill me should I give into the burning pain in my muscles. I should let myself relax into the air around me but I can’t let go despite the assurance I’ve been secured for later rounds.

They call it fun, these rounds of torture I’m made to endure. They’re anything but. At times I feel like the skin is being flayed from my bones. In others, my fingernails are pried a bit further from the tips of my fingers. My tongue has already been cut out and my screams have become guttural moans of pain.

I don’t blame them. I put myself in this position. Acting like what I was doing was normal, moral, and even sanctioned by a God none of us could see nor chose to believe in. How could we believe? Growing up, we’d all seen more pain, inflicted even more carnage on those around us. The many who fell through the cracks of society running rampant with a kill-before-being-killed mentality.

It’s a miracle I’d survived until now. Most would have died before my tender age of seventeen, succumbing to the streets filled with those up to no good.

And I had been one of them. One of the worst. Not afraid to slit the throat of my best friend for a dollar. Never loyal enough not to rat out my own mother for the chance to spare my own life until the next time something came calling in the night.

It led me to this moment in this shaft knowing my time had thankfully come. My body is tired from the constant fight for survival but my mind is sharp, still working on a way to get out, to get away. My mind fixates on the bloody handprint I know was on the inside of the shaft’s door. Proof someone had gotten out.

I vow to leave my own as I escape.

SERVICE

Serviceimage_04

My mistress makes me wait in stony silence, looking down from above at those who pass below. I can smell their sins, their worries, their fear; but I’m not permitted to act on their misery. Just to anticipate.

As the eternity of time stretches ever nearer its end, I can’t help but grow weary of the wait. The never ending stream of wretched consciousness, the overwhelming stench of despair; all of it drains me as it feeds me just enough to continue my taciturn vigil.

I long for the taste of them to run down my parched throat, but I remain steadfast in my soundless sentry. There will be blood when my mistress commands it; and it will fall from the mouths of us all to spatter on the streets below.

FLASH FICTION FRIDAY: Have You Ever | #freefiction #flashfiction #pictureprompt

Have You Ever…

HaveYouEverimage_02

Part One

Have you ever felt the searing pain of a bite? The way your flesh tears away from itself, the warmth of your blood spreading outward? The white hot pain that clouds your judgement as the nerves once hidden are exposed to the harshness of the outside world?

It’s agony, pure and simple. Your body reacts with a flush of adrenaline, turning you into a super human for the moments it can stand the natural drug running through it. Pain becomes numbed, your other senses heightened, but sometimes it’s for naught.

There’s nothing you can do in the face of murderous hunger. A hunger so intense its unimaginable by those not feeding off it.

The minute I fall is the minute it’s over. The pain is more intense and while my eyes don’t want to see my own end, it is inevitable. That face, my blood smeared across it, is the image I see before it goes dark.

Part Two

Have you ever felt the instinctual need to eat? The way flesh tears away from itself, the warmth of someone’s blood as it flows down your throat? The blinding need that clouds your judgement as the taste of your victim spreads through your amygdala.

It’s ecstasy, pure and simple. Your body reacts with a flush of dopamine, turning your desire into something palpable, orgasmic. Your other senses heighten as the pleasure washes over you, you want—no, need—more.

There’s nothing you can do in the face of insatiable hunger. Your hunger so intense it transforms into unimaginable pleasure misunderstood unless you’ve felt it firsthand.

In a minute it’s over and the bliss slackens, falling off into nothingness but a dull remembrance. The pain of need becomes intense again and your smile turns into a grimace. The body before you is spent, their blood a reminder of the hunger that’s building again.

Eyes in the Sky

EyesintheSkyimage_03

They foretold of terrible events to come.

The eyes in the sky appeared one day and were burned into the memories of those who witnessed them. At the time, no one knew what to think, staring in awe instead of trying to understand the ominous message. With the birds silent and the creatures still, one might have thought the world was recharging, resetting.

But when they came, the eyes disappeared, fading into the horizon, not staying to witness the ensuing carnage. It was vicious, lethal, unrelenting. Suffering unlike anything that could have been imagined—with no one left to witness the utter extermination, the eyes returned to oversee the wasteland they’d created.

INTERVIEW

Where were you born?

I was born in Jackson, Michigan and spent my first five years growing up in a three-room quonset hut with no indoor plumbing in Spring Arbor, Michigan. The next six years, I enjoyed a wonderful learning experience in a four-story mansion called The St. Joseph Orphanage where 50 of us young boys were guided by a stern but very well-meaning group of Polish Nuns. There were no TVs or radios on the premises, and we spent most of our time studying, exercising in team sports, or praying to improve our minds, bodies souls. While many of the lads wouldn’t necessarily feel the same, I truly looked at this journey during my developmental years as something that established very good values and direction to my life.

Describe yourself in 5 words or less!

Calming listener always embracing friendships. (Many troubled boys in the orphanage were drawn to me because I would patiently listen to their concerns and try to console them. Friends were easy to come by in such an environment. It has been a rewording trait that has carried over into my later years!)

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

While I began my first journey writing a manuscript about investing in 2013, five years after I retired from IBM, I didn’t feel like a true writer. Yes, I was writing and transforming my knowledge into words, but it wasn’t until I followed my heart and mind into a new world with exciting adventures created through my elaborate dreams that led me to my first science fiction novel. I was truly creating something from my imagination where I’d dive into the depths of the lives of Ukkiville’s villagers and the dangers they faced each and every day! I lived in that world for over a year while writing my first novel!

Who is you hero and why?

My speech teacher, Blaine Goodrich, and his caring wife, Marilyn, who welcomed me into their abode during my senior year in high school when I left home. They were amazing and very understanding of my prior untenable family situation. Blaine was instrumental in guiding me toward a sound college education. He and Mar have supported me throughout my life and proudly attend my book signings during returns to my home town.

Andy at 40-year High School Reunion - Cropped_355x400About the Author: While writing The New World trilogy proved to be one of the most exciting challenges of my life, if anyone had told me six years ago I’d be writing science fiction action-adventure novels, I would have declared them bonkers! For most of my life, I had been an engineering and programming nerd whose main reading materials included technical scientific articles and books with little time to read novels of any sort of fiction.

The few dreams I experienced during my lengthy career as a Sr. Software Development Manager at IBM mostly focused on conjuring solutions to tough technical issues at work. Never did sleep delve into imagining some fictional adventure. But that all changed after I retired from IBM in March of 2007 at age 53 with 30 rewarding years of service. The extra time on my hands provided plenty of hours to devote to more creative endeavors.

My initial attempt at writing capitalized on my 30 years of investing in all sorts of financial assets. I wanted to share my knowledge with our children to aid their financial planning. After completing more than 400 pages of the manuscript, I joined a writers’ group. The members liked the technical content but advised me to liven it up to make in more attractive for my younger target audience of high school and collage graduates getting a start on life. I came up with an fictional world and a couple of quirky characters to weave into my investing lessons.

The members loved the improvements, but an unexpected problem bared itself: my brain refused to churn out nightly ideas about investments. Instead, my dreams gushed with captivating characters and an intriguing new world with plenty of vicious beasts lurking in the shadows of my mind. I had no choice but to follow the fate which unfolded night after night, providing oodles of exciting material to more than fulfill any writing desires. I provided my financial manuscript to my daughters, and from that exhilarating change of direction in 2014, I’ve been creating a fascinating new world at the turn of the next century!

I began writing my first novel, The New World: A Step Backward in June of 2014 and published it on June 28, 2015.  A little over a year later, on October 1, 2016, I published Book 2 of the series, The New World: Blue Moon Generation. After a bit of a delay due to the challenges of a serious family illness, I completed the final novel of the Trilogy, The New World: Crimson Winter and published it on November 6, 2018.

GUEST POST

Kim’s Ten Top Favorite Dystopian Novels

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

Brave New World is a dark utopian future where humans are genetically bred and pharmaceutically anesthetized to serve a ruling order.”

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

“Fahrenheit 451 is a story where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction. Firemen start fires rather than put them out.”

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

“In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.”

Animal Farm by George Orwell

“A farm is taken over by its overworked, mistreated animals. With flaming idealism and stirring slogans, they set out to create a paradise of progress, justice, and equality. Thus the stage is set for one of the most telling satiric fables ever penned—a razor-edged fairy tale for grown-ups that records the evolution from revolution against tyranny to a totalitarianism just as terrible.

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

“Set in the near future, it describes life in what was once the United States and is now called the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy that has reacted to social unrest and a sharply declining birthrate by reverting to, and going beyond, the repressive intolerance of the original Puritans. The regime takes the Book of Genesis absolutely at its word, with bizarre consequences for the women and men in its population.”

Year One by Nora Roberts

“Year One is an epic story of hope and horror, chaos and magick, and a journey that will unite a desperate group of people to fight the battle of their lives…”

Divergent by Veronica Roth

“One choice can transform you. Beatrice Prior’s society is divided into five factions—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). Beatrice must choose between staying with her Abnegation family and transferring factions. Her choice will shock her community and herself. But the newly christened Tris also has a secret, one she’s determined to keep hidden, because in this world, what makes you different makes you dangerous.”

Legend by Marie Lu

“What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic’s wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic’s highest military circles.”

The Giver by Louis Lowry

“Twelve-year-old Jonas lives in a seemingly ideal world. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver does he begin to understand the dark secrets behind this fragile community.”

City of Embers by Jeanne DuPrau

“Many hundreds of years ago, the city of Ember was created by the Builders to contain everything needed for human survival. It worked…but now the storerooms are almost out of food, crops are blighted, corruption is spreading through the city and worst of all—the lights are failing. Soon Ember could be engulfed by darkness…”
